Summer 2025-Spring 2026 OPIP is supported to conduct up to three trainings with rural primary care practices.
OPIP is leading a series of training events and implementation supports for Aviva Health, a Federally Qualified Health Center in Rural Douglas County. The initiative focuses on increasing awareness of the social-emotional services young children should receive in primary care settings. It will also provide training for primary care providers and behavioral health clinicians, and share evidence-based, actionable strategies to strengthen services. In addition, the project aims to support family-centered connections to external resources. Below is an outline of the trainings and consultations provided.
Part 1: Training for Behavioral Health Staff (PCBH & Outpatient) Working With Young Children
Goal: Teach behavioral health staff how to use secondary assessments and brief interventions for children ages 0–5.
- 1A. In-Person Training (Aug 14, 8–11am)
Overview of secondary assessments, decision-making, and strategies for early childhood social-emotional delays. - 1B. Monthly Webinars (Sept 2025–Apr 2026)
Eight 1-hour webinars covering common early childhood social-emotional issues, interventions, referrals, and billing.- Disruptive Behavior 1 – Positive Parenting Strategies, Disruptive Behavior 2 – Effective Discipline, Early Childhood Sleep, Early Childhood Anxiety, Toilet Training and Elimination Problems, Engaging Families in Behavioral Health Services, Managing Common Concerns for Children with Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities, Billing Considerations.

Staff can request monthly consultations with Dr. Riley.
Part 2: Improving External Referrals & Helping Families Access Services
Goal: Strengthen referral processes and help families engage in behavioral health services.
- OPIP created a resource summary for Douglas County and adapts parent education materials for Aviva.
- 2A. Referral Workflow Meeting (Aug 14)
OPIP met with Aviva QI Team Members in-person August 14th 1-3pm to understand the care coordination team workflow for referrals to Behavioral Health, in both the pediatric and family medicine service lines. - 2B. Referral Team Training (Oct 8, 2025)
Guidance on choosing appropriate external referrals and helping families navigate behavioral health systems.
Part 3: Training for Primary Care Providers (PCPs & Residents)
Goal: Equip primary care providers with actionable tools and strategies to enhance their ability to identify and address common social-emotional health issues in young children (such as disruptive behavior, early childhood anxiety, sleep issues, toilet training).
- 3A. Screening Tool Consultation
Review Bright Futures/EPSDT-aligned screening options, check EHR compatibility, and recommend tools.
Includes presentation at the 10/28/25 Pediatrics Operations meeting and a follow-up decision meeting as well as implementation work. - 3B. Provider Trainings
- Nov 5, 2025 (8–9am): Overview of recommendations, definitions, strategies, and CCO metric.
- Lunchtime Webinar Series:
- January 6th, 2026 12-1: Guidance and parental education on common social-emotional Issues. Training by Dr. Riley on specific strategies to address the most common social emotional issues identified in well-visits.
- March 3rd, 2026 12-1: Engaging families of young children in behavioral health services: Tips and Tricks, including a medical decision framework, talking points to use with families, and parent education sheets to support shared decision making.
- June 9th, 2026 12-1: Overview webinar on Maternal Depression (Edinburgh) & Social-Emotional Health (Preschool Pediatric Symptom Checklist) Screening Tools Aviva Will Be Implementing: Tools, Scoring and Follow-up.
- 3C. Resident Follow-Up Trainings (May 21st, 2026)
OPIP is working with Aviva Health residency leadership to determine the specific content that will be covered again during the Thursday resident didactic time on 5-21-26 with a follow-up virtual meeting on the new screening tools to be implemented (date TBD).
Part 4 : Training for Medical Assistants
Goal: Ensure Medical Assistants can administer and score screenings and prepare materials for providers (Spring 2026 ).
Part 5: Ongoing Implementation Support
Goal: Provide continuous guidance as Aviva rolls out new workflows.
- Sept 2025–May 2026: Multidisciplinary team check-ins for tailored coaching and troubleshooting.
